ANOTHER NAC GOLD FOR AFA!
Coach Andrei's regimen of conditioning, fencing drills, private lessons, and strategy sessions paid off yet again as Kael McInnis came from behind in both the quarter finals and semi finals of the Y14ME event in the Portland, Oregon North American Cup Tournament on April 26, 2008, to take the gold medal!  Oksana Samorodov also medaled, taking seventh place in the Y14WE event on April 27.

Other AFA fencers that competed in the NAC were:  Farrah Lee-Elabd (10th Y10WE); Anna Tolley (11th Y12WE, 45th Y14WE); Avital Sless (23rd Y14WE); Elizabeth Gilbert (27th Y14WE); Alex Sless (53rd Y12ME); Robert Reed (37th Div. 1 ME).

ALAMO FENCING ACADEMY EPEE FENCERS DOMINATE AT THE MARCH 2008 HOUSTON SUPER YOUTH CIRCUIT TOURNAMENT
AFA fencers demonstrated over the weekend of March 14-16 that practice does pay!  Twelve AFA fencers joined Coach Andrei to compete in the epee events at the Super Youth Circuit tournament in Houston, Texas.  Ten of those fencers returned with medals!  AFA's dominance really showed itself in the Y14 women's event wherein Andrei's students captured 6 of the 8 available medals.  And in the Y14 men's event, Kael McInnis showed the heart of a champion when he fought his way to the gold medal bout, despite having sustained an injury to his right foot in the quarter finals that made it next to impossible for him to move on the strip.  The participants in the tournament were as follows:

AFA Fencers Sweep the Spruill-Masters Open
Robert Reed, Kael McInnis and Risto Hurme took 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively at the 2008 Spruill-Masters Mixed Open Epee in Austin, Texas on February 10.  As a result of his finish, Kael McInnis earned his "B" rating! Also competing in the Mixed Open Epee event were August (Trae) Taute III, Claudine Barjak-Velez, and Joshua Velez.  June Hurme took 2nd in the Women's Open Epee, and Kael McInnis and Joshua Velez finished 2nd and 6th respectively in the Mixed D and Under Epee on February 9. 
ALAMO FENCING ACADEMY FENCERS CONTINUE TO DO WELL AT
NATIONAL AND REGIONAL FENCING TOURNAMENTS
The Division 1 North American Cup Fencing Tournament took place in Richmond, Virginia on December 7-9, 2007, and AFA fencers again demonstrated their prowess.  Claudine Barjak-Velez, who has been fencing for only 1.5 years, fought hard through the pools and DEs to finish 38th out of 113 fencers in Women's Div. 1 Epee.  Similarly, Nick Kubik finished in the top 30%  (45th out of 153 femcers) in Men's Div. 1 Foil.

On December 1-2, 2007, seven AFA fencers participated in the Houston Regional Youth Circuit and brought home 5 medals.  Participants included:  Oksana Samorodov (Gold medalist Y14WE), Anna Tolley (Gold Medalist Y12WE, 7th Y14WE), Elizabeth Gilbert (Silver Medalist Y14WE), MaCallan Goaley (Silver Medalist Y12WE, 11th Y14WE), Leah Badri (5th Y14WE), Sean Nesloney (14th Y12ME), TJ Goaley (19th Y14ME)
Eight AFA Fencers Fence at the November NAC in Dallas
Kael McInnis added another medal to his collection as the 7th place finalist in Y14 Men's Epee at the North American Cup, which took place in Dallas from November 9-12, 2007.  Seven other fencers from Alamo Fencing Academy also competed in various events.  The competitors and their finishes are listed below:

AFA FIELDS TWO MEDALISTS AT THE 2007 U.S. SUMMER NATIONALS IN MIAMI BEACH
Ten Alamo Fencing Academy Fencers made the trip to Miami Beach for the U.S. Nationals.  Natalie Parma and Kael McInnis were top 8 finalists, taking 3rd and 6th place medals respectively.  Other fencers competing were:  Sean Nesloney (18th Y10ME); Thomas Goaley (94th Y12ME); Robert Reed (31st Div1ME; 11th Div1AME); Farrah Lee-Elabd (22nd Y10WE); Elizabeth Gilbert (14th Y12WE, 86th Y14WE); Macallan Goaley (43rd Y12WE); Leah Badri (60th Y14WE, 81st Div3WE); and, Oksana Samorodov (49th Y14WE, 20th U16WE, 42nd U19WE).
OKSANA SAMORODOV STRIKES GOLD AT THE NORTH AMERICAN CUP IN TUCSON!
Oksana Samorodov learned in Tucson, Arizona that hard work and training really do pay off in GOLD!  Beating out a field of 41 fencers in the women's Y14 Epee event, Oksana won the gold medal bout with a score of 15-6 at the North American Cup fencing tournament held April 20-23, 2007.  Naturally, Coach Samorodov is very proud of his student and daughter.

AFA were Natalie Parma, who won a Bronze medal in the women's Y12 event and Kael McInnis, who won a Fifth Place medal in the men's Y12 event.

Also fencing in the NAC were Elizabeth Gilbert, Harry Parma, and Leah Badri, all of whom fenced quite well during the event.
